Questions - Answers Commonly asked questions and answers
Q: How can I get a custom wood turning?
A: All turnings start with a Cad drawing which allows us to control every dimension and element. We frequently start with a photo or sketch. If you want a specific reproduction we need a sample or dimension drawing. In any case, we can print and fax a drawing for your approval. We have reproduced Victorian, Federal, Shaker, Early American or Colonial wooden posts as well as Craftsman style products.
Q: How do you do your wood turnings?
A: We have several lathes, including our newest state of the art Locatelli CNC (computer numerical control) lathe. The Locatelli is the real workhorse in the shop and gives us the capacity to do multiple turnings or custom turnings efficiently.
Q: What is the capacity of your lathe?
A: We can do wooden posts up to 7 1/2 inches square and 63 inches long. Cylanders can be up to 11 inches in diameter.
Q: What kinds of woods to you turn?
A: We generally turn domestic and exotic hardwoods dependant upon the price and availability. Softwoods, such as pine, cedar, or fir don\'t cut as clearly, but can be turned.
Q: What is the most popular wood right now?
A: In our business alder has been the most popular wood for the past 15 years. It can be stained to look like cherry, but it looks nice with a clear or with a light stain. For a hardwood it is fairly soft and dents easily, but few customers change their minds. They like the look of alder and knotty alder. Clear alder has an occasional knot, but is about twice the cost of knotty alder.
Q: How much sanding is required before finishing?
A: Handrail comes unsanded and is usually sanded after installation on the job site. Everything else is sanded to a 150 grit. Painters and finishers love our products!
Q: Do you do box newels?
A: Our basic box newel is 5 1/4 inches and is made to slip over a 4X4 anchored posts. We do larger box newels for custom orders. We have several of our most popular box newels shown in our photo gallery. When used as an end post the newel must be different on one side to allow for the handrail. We have flat caps and the popular pyramid caps. We also have several flat panel and raised panel styles.
Q: How do you ship your products?
A: We normally ship products UPS, but handrail and larger custom turned posts go by common carrier. Along the Wasatch front we use a courier service.
